Glam & Gore

Who is Glam & Gore?

Glam & Gore is an American internet persona active on YouTube, Instagram and other social media. Her real name is Lauren Mychal, although she likes to be called Mykie. She was born on 1st November 1989 in Philadelphia.

Mykie has been interested in makeup since childhood and liked to try it out while attending school. As she wanted to work in the movie industry, she taught herself all the basics and later even Special FX. After graduating from film school, she decided to move to Los Angeles to find a job in movie sets.

Mykie's YouTube career

She created her YouTube channel in 2014, mainly as a tool to create a portfolio since she was still working as a freelance makeup artist. She started by posting a few makeup tutorials and participating in similar themed Instagram challenges, such as #100daysofmakeup. Although her makeup tutorials were getting popular, Mykie began to focus on exploring other possibilities in the makeup world. She started with celebrities’ makeup looks and then moved to cosplay movies and cartoon characters, such as Khaleesi, Deadpool and Little Mermaid.

Mykie was never going to stop at the beautiful side of makeup. She went on to use Special FX techniques to show that with makeup, she can also create scary and extremely realistic horror characters. In one of her most viewed videos, she created two Barbie-inspired looks. The video is called Pre and Post-op Plastic Surgery Barbie. As the title suggests, one version of Barbie is porcelain perfect, and the other is covered in bruises and stitches, portraying where the surgery went wrong. This concept became so popular that Mykie started a series where she makes herself look like a Disney princess, which she then transforms into her disfigured version.

Besides being an extremely talented makeup artist, Mykie is also the so-called Ghost Hunter, meaning that she likes to discover abandoned, scary and possibly haunted places. She managed to combine her two hobbies of hers and started a series where she does her horror-like makeup in haunted places. Her makeup looks are themed based on the location, for example, a disfigured prisoner in an abandoned prison.

Mykie's viral posts

Mykie seems to love a DC Universe character Harley Quinn, based on the number of times she cosplayed some version of her. In 2015 the Suicide Squad movie came out, and people were discussing a lot of Joker’s tattoos, specifically, where the design came from. The discussions became even louder when a photo of Harley with a tattoo gun appeared. Most people thought it was an actual set photo, but in reality, Harley in the picture was no one else than Mykie herself. Soon enough, she made a statement ending the conspiracies but was amazed by her ability to fool so many people.

As if it wasn’t enough, Mykie pulled the same trick two years later, when the video game Death Stranding launched. This time, it wasn’t Mykie’s intention to confuse anyone. She simply made a YouTube tutorial on how to make a Death Stranding-inspired look. After that, the internet did its job and shared an image taken from said video, with the caption that Emma Stone would be in the game’s cast. Since the picture was blurred and had no background, it should’ve been clear that it was fake. But still, it made some people very disappointed that they won to see their favourite actress in the game.

In 2016, Snapchat was accused of using several makeup artists’ work as a filter and not giving any credit to said artists. One of Mykie’s friends alerted her that her makeup look with watercolour tears appeared as a Snapchat filter as well. She immediately confronted Snapchat, and luckily, they responded in a good way. Soon after, they added new layers of reviewing filters before releasing them, so it would not happen again.

Mykie's controversy

In 2020, Mykie’s name appeared in Spankie Valentine’s, her former friend’s, video, where Spankie accused her of being racist and homophobic. Her video was one hour long and included screenshots of Mykie negatively attributing Jeffree Star’s and James Charles’ success to them being gay. It also shows her other comment, where she stated that it’s hard to be popular on YouTube if you’re not a minority of some sort. Mykie responded with a long series of Instagram stories, explaining that she was jealous and insecure and that she was aware of her inexcusable behaviour.

Although Mykie apologized for her words many times, her fans didn’t see her the same again. This might be one of the reasons why Mykie disappeared from YouTube and isn’t uploading videos since 2021.
