Zoe Sugg

Who is Zoe Sugg?

Zoe Sugg is an American beauty blogger and vlogger, active on YouTube, Instagram and other social platforms. Her real name is Zoe Elizabeth Sugg, born on 28th March 1990 in Lacock, Wiltshire. In her native village, she attended the Corsham School and Arts College, where she graduated in arts, photography and textiles. Zoe didn’t attend university due to her mental state and also indecision in considering her future.

Zoe's blog and career

After school, Zoe worked at an interior design company, but the job didn’t fulfil her expectations. During that time, she created her blog called Zoella, where she posted beauty tips, including makeup, jewellery and fashion. Because of the blog, Zoe discovered her passion for writing and that she had a gift for it. Her page became incredibly popular, and within a year, it had hundreds of millions of views in total. She may have gained her popularity through beauty-oriented blogs, but Zoe had a connection with her audience from the beginning. She had won their trust by writing on more serious issues, such as her anxiety disorder or the subject of cyberbullying.

YouTube channel Zoella

In addition to her popular blog, Zoe created her YouTube channel called Zoella in 2007. But due to her shyness and a time-consuming job at the New Look store, she didn’t begin posting until 2009. Her videos consisted mainly of makeup tips, fashion vlogs and the favourite products of each month. Since Zoe wanted to start filming daily vlogs but didn’t want it to disrupt the image she created on her main account. So, in addition to that, she made her second YouTube channel, called Zoe Sugg, after her.

From the first look at Zoe’s YouTube channels or blog, she clearly likes to have everything organized. On her vlogging channel, all the daily vlogs are divided into series by year or theme. This quality of hers became very helpful not a long time later. The series of each year go all the way back to 2013, which was Zoe’s first year of real fame. She became a member of the Style Haul network and got mentioned as one of Britain’s Most Influential Tweeters by Time Magazine. Due to her striving to raise awareness about mental disorders, she was named the Digital Ambassador for Mind, which is a mental health-oriented charity.

Zoella Beauty and Zoe's book

In 2014, Zoe created her own beauty line called Zoella Beauty and almost immediately launched the first collection, which consisted of bath products. It became a hit and, within the first week, started selling out. With every other collection, the brand became more and more recognized, which provided it with a secure spot in the beauty market. 2014 was overall a crucial year for Zoe’s future career. Due to her blog’s publicity, she managed to sign a two-book contract with Penguin Books. Her debut book called Girl Online is about a 15-year-old girl in a relationship with a handsome boy. But due to her personal blog discovery, their relationship is in danger. Even if the main character might seem familiar, Zoe stated that it is, in fact, not an autobiography. This book reached the list of top-selling books, considering the first-week sales. Two other books were published in 2015 and 2016, under the titles Girl Online: On Tour and Girl Online: Going Solo.

Zoe remains an active YouTuber, blogger and mental health activist to this day. Her brand’s as successful as ever, and her fans love her despite longer pauses on her YouTube channel since she is a very busy person. In 2021, her YouTube channel took a turn because Zoe had a baby with her husband, Alfie Deyes. Since it’s a significant change in her life, she shares every critical moment with her audience. She hasn’t been active on her first channel, Zoella at least four years and is only using it as an archive.
